Katha A Tale of Weaves is a Kolkata-based luxury slow-fashion label reimagining Bengal’s textile heritage through contemporary design thinking. Rooted in the belief that heirloom crafts are living, evolving expressions rather than static artifacts, Katha brings together tradition, storytelling, and modern sensibilities to create sarees and designer blouses that resonate with today’s woman.

Founded by Suchandra Sengupta, IIM Calcutta alumna and Chief Creative Head of Katha A Tale of Weaves, the brand approaches Bengal’s iconic weaves with a distinct design-first perspective. Katha’s philosophy lies in innovating within the weave while preserving the integrity of the craft, transforming traditional textiles into refined, contemporary expressions of modern luxury.

Katha’s collections span a diverse range of Bengal’s celebrated weaves including Jamdani, Baluchari, Tangail, Pure Mulberry Silk, Tussar, and other heirloom textile traditions. Over the years, the brand has developed a recognisable design language through evocative collections such as Kumartulir Katha, Imperial Calcutta Jamdani, Lal Par Sada Saree, and The Threads of Rebellion, each inspired by Bengal’s cultural memory while seamlessly adapting to contemporary wardrobes.

At the heart of Katha lies a strong emphasis on thoughtful detailing, narrative-driven design, and designer blouses as integral elements of heirloom dressing. This approach has shaped a growing community of discerning customers across India and international markets, leading to repeat patronage, frequent sell-outs, and increasing pre-bookings.

Today, Katha works with a steadily growing artisan community of over 200 artisans and master weavers across Bengal, while its studio and retail space in Salt Lake, Kolkata offers an immersive experience where customers can engage closely with the craft, process, and stories behind every creation.

Katha’s work and evolving design philosophy have been recognised by leading publications and platforms including The Times of India, HELLO! Magazine, The Telegraph t2, and Sananda. Adding to these milestones, Katha’s innovative design ethos was recently honoured when Suchandra Sengupta received the Trendsetter in Heirloom Design trophy at the Grazia Trendsetters East 2026, co-curated by Femina.
