The Origins of Baluchari Cotton Sarees
The elegant six-yard drape of the Bengal Baluchari saree has immense cultural and traditional significance, particularly for women in West Bengal and Bangladesh. It’s renowned for its delicate handiwork and mythological designs, specifically on the pallu, which usually depicts scenes from the Mahabharata and the Ramayana.
The name of this timeless classic is derived from its place of origin—Baluchar in Murshidabad. Murshid Quli Khan, the Nawab of Murshidabad, patronised the Baluchari weaving craft during the 18th century. This resulted in the craftsmanship prospering, and the saree became a practice in the village and extended to Dhaka.
However, a devastating flood in the Bhagirathi River led to enormous losses in the villages of Murshidabad. This caused the Baluchar weavers to migrate to the Bankura district, where they settled in the village of Bishnupur. Despite financial and political setbacks during the colonial era, the craft persisted. Today, authentic Baluchari cotton sarees are produced in Bishnupur and a few other regions of West Bengal.
