Weaving Story

Baluchari weaving began in a small village called Baluchar in Murshidabad district, where it got its name.

The Nawab of Bengal, Murshidkuli Khan, patronized this rich tradition and brought it to the Baluchar village.

After the village submerged due to a Ganga river flood, the industry shifted to Bishnupur in Bankura district.

In the 20th century, artist Subho Thakur revived Baluchari weaving by inviting master weaver Akshay Kumar Das to learn jacquard techniques. These sarees are renowned for their mythological scenes intricately woven into the anchal (pallu) of the fabric.
